Eligibility

Open to all Iowa residents in need of having something notarized, or to any Iowan that wants to be a notary, to be a Notary, a person must be at least 18 years old; be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States; not be disqualified to be a notary under Iowa Code section 9B.23; be a resident of the state of Iowa or a resident of a state bordering Iowa if their place of work or business is in Iowa; be able to read and write English; and, file an application with the Secretary of State's office and pay a $30.00 filing fee. See Iowa Code section 9B.21.

Description

The Iowa Secretary of State's office issues Notary Public commissions for the State of Iowa. The responsibilities of an Iowa Notary Public are critical to the legal, business, financial, and real estate communities in the state. A Notary Public is a person commissioned by the Secretary of State to serve the public as an impartial and unbiased witness by identifying persons who come before the notary. The most common function of the notary is to witness and attest that a person signing a document is authentic.
